Action Painting

This body of work, titled Action Painting, (a riff on the ab-ex expression of action painting) employs abstraction and curiosity to express repulsion and attraction. One object is a constructed painted object and the other player in this interaction is the natural environment; In this instance, the usual expression of a ‘setting’ or a place is decided upon because of features or elements that will hold, display or interact with the constructed object.

“Newton’s law of universal gravitation is usually stated as that every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.”

Using video, photograph, sculpture and painting this series constructs an abstract narrative of time and place that is planned and studied yet left to improvisation and chance. This use of traditional multi-media presentation furthers the investigation of interaction between object and space.

Naomi Clark paints her surroundings though an abstracted filter. Clark does this using bold coloration, fragmented forms and gestural brushstrokes. Color is central to her work. These elements provide energy and creativity to the viewer. Her work becomes a resting place for the mind, free from judgment, where the viewer returns to the excitement felt in childhood, where creativity reigns and ideas begin.
